FSR Inc. Leadership Transition
In order to facilitate the transitions envisioned in the Action Items to Combat Anti-Black Racism adopted by FSR editors and boards in the summer of 2020, Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza has resigned from the presidency of FSR, Inc. The FSR, Inc board is grateful to Dr. Deborah Whitehead for serving as Interim President for one year as FSR evaluates its institutional structure and practices. It is our intent to create an organizational space that is supportive of and developed with women of color which requires that we expand our community and self-reflect on FSR’s history and current practices. We appreciate the current members of the FSR leadership team for their wisdom, energy, and commitment as we move ahead.
Schüssler Fiorenza has served as President of FSR, Inc. since the organization’s inception. She co-founded the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion with Judith Plaskow, co-edited it with her for its first ten years, then served as co-editor with Emilie Townes, Kwok Pui Lan, Stephanie Mitchem, and Melanie Johnson-DeBaufre, before moving to senior editor in 2014 when Traci West and Judith Plaskow started their term as co-editors. In addition to serving as JFSR co-editor and senior editor, Schüssler Fiorenza has worked with various FSR members to host conferences and annual AAR/SBL gatherings, and published her newest book, Congress of Wo/men: Religion, Gender, and Kyriarchal Power, to start FSR Press in 2018.
Elisabeth has worked with some three generations of feminist scholars. Thanks to the work study support through Harvard Divinity School, she was able to support feminist student interns and future scholars. In the words of Judith Plaskow, “It is impossible to imagine what the shape of the field would be without her scholarship, imagination, and leadership.” Her unfaltering support of feminist studies in religion has helped to create a global network of feminist scholars. In recognition of her many years of leadership, the FSR, Inc board has named her President Emerita beginning in 2021.
