Below you will find the FSR Blog’s current open calls for blogs. Most CFBs (Call for Blogs) will be for an @theTable roundtable series, which you can learn more about here. All submissions and inquiries should be sent to [email protected].
The FSR Blog also has an ongoing open call for blogs. We accept open submissions on any topics that engage feminism and religion at all times. You can find the blog’s complete blog submission guidelines here.
- New Call For Blogs: “Black Women and Speculative Fiction” – submissions due March 7, 2024
The FSR Blog is issuing an Open Call for a new @theTable series on Black Women & Religion in Speculative Fiction. We are looking for blogs that explore themes of Black womanhood, religion/spirituality, and feminism in fantasy, science fiction, magical realism, time travel, etc. Blogs on Black women authors and characters are welcome.
Some guiding questions that we hope shape the series are: How do Black fantasy/sci fi authors engage themes of religion and spirituality? How do Black female characters in speculative fiction engage with religion and feminism? Are there any marked differences in the stories created by Black women that highlight how religion/spirituality/transcendence is incorporated into worldbuilding? What do these characters/authors teach us about the human condition? And how might these works be used in theological education?
If you love reading Octavia Butler, NK Jemisin, Toni Adeyemi, Halo Hopkinson, Nnedi Okoafor, and Tananarive Due or have something to say about Susannah Dean (in Steven King’s Gunslinger series), Storm or Ironheart (Marvel), or Martha Jones (Doctor Who), this call is for you.
All blog submissions should include a title, be around 800-1000 words, use hyperlinks for citations, and when possible and relevant, incorporate photo, video, etc. We do not review proposals, so please send a full blog if you would like to be considered for the @theTable series. All visual media must have a reference and/or hyperlink to the original source. All blog posts appropriate for the FSR Blog will be sent out anonymously to at least two reviewers, upon whose judgment the editors heavily rely. Feel free to review previous blogs and @theTable series for style and email [email protected] with any questions. Submissions for this series are due March 7, 2024.
- We want to hear your responses to FSR Blog’s @theTable: “Unorthodox Media“
We invite you, our readers, to reflect on any of blogs in this series or contribute your own analysis of “My Unorthodox Life” or other forms of what this series names “unorthodox media.” Blogs must adhere to our submission guidelines. View the original CFB here.
- Please consider contributing to FSR Blog’s @theTable: “Racism and the Feminist Study of Religion“
While other @theTable blog series present an almost entirely self-contained conversation in four or five blogs during one week, the blogs in this series will be posted once a week to allow for more reflection. Additionally, this conversation will be ongoing, as our antiracist work is ongoing. We invite colleagues (scholars, activists, and students) to add to this ongoing dialogue. Authors can comment on the racist history of the academic study of feminism and religion, share personal experiences with racism in the academy, promote or explore research that belies racism within the feminist study of religion, or imagine new paths forward. Authors might also consider writing blogs that explore and critique Womanist and Mujerista movements, for instance. We also welcome blogs on additional topics not mentioned here but that somehow interrogate the relationship between racism and the feminist study of religion. The submissions deadline is rolling and pieces must adhere to our submission guidelines. View the original CFB here.
