PANAAWTM Continues to Live! A History and the Future of Transnational Asian/American Feminist Theologies

Volume 41 Number 2
Author(s):
Boyung Lee
Abstract:

Lee discusses the 40-year legacy of PANAAWTM (Pacific, Asian, and North American Asian Women in Theology and Ministry), a pioneering organization advancing transnational Asian/American feminist theologies. Founded in 1984, PANAAWTM emerged as a response to the racial and gender exclusion in theological spaces. It centers embodied knowledge, communal leadership, and intergenerational mentorship, providing a transformative platform for Asian and Asian American women and nonbinary theologians. Over the decades, PANAAWTM has expanded its focus from liberation and postcolonial theologies to intersectionality, globalization, eco-justice, and interfaith collaboration. It has engaged major social movements like #MeToo and Black Lives Matter, emphasizing solidarity across racial and religious lines. In the 2020s, PANAAWTM adapted to challenges like COVID-19 and anti-Asian violence by shifting to virtual platforms and expanding global engagement. Its ongoing mission integrates theological scholarship, activism, and community-building to resist systemic oppression and cultivate inclusive, justice-oriented theological praxis.
