Feminist Studies in Religion Blog (FSR Blog) is the site persona under which collective information is posted. Similar to the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, we welcome a variety of contributions that focus on women's experience or on gender as a category of analysis, and that further feminist theory, consciousness, and practice as they pertain to a weblog format. If you would like to submit material for consideration to be posted by FSR Blog, email Blog(at)fsrinc.org.

CFB: “Transcending Transphobia”: FSR Blog’s Call for Thematic Blog Submissions!

@ the Table, Archives, Politics, Social Justice

We want to hear your responses to FSR Blog’s @theTable: “Transcending Transphobia.” Having rethought about religious rhetorics, gendercide, and HB2 (Jacqueline M. Hidalgo), critiqued the rhetoric of trans-exclusive radical feminism and religion (Siobhan Kelly), explored non-binary transgender as Nepantla (Robyn Henderson-Espinoza), and finished with some concluding reflections on the conversation thus far and on the language of […]

Exploring Non-binary Transgender as the place of Nepantla (@theTable: Transcending Transphobia)

@ the Table, Archives, FSR, Politics, Social Justice

By Robyn Henderson-Espinoza. As someone who lives on multiple borderlands and always betwixt in/between male and female, race, class, ability, and religion, I have experienced a deep struggle in dominant trans literature that has largely surfaced throughout the academy for not having space for someone like myself. I am certain there are others who have similar […]

Feminist Transphobia, Feminist Rhetoric: From Trans-Exclusive Radical Feminism to HB 2 (@theTable: Transcending Transphobia)

@ the Table, Archives, FSR, Politics, Social Justice

By Siobhan Kelly. The field of feminist studies in religion has failed to live up to its liberatory potential when it comes to trans* inclusion and liberation. As a young scholar of religion whose gender differs from its binary assignment at birth, feminism, to me, is supposed to be a place to find home; its […]

Rethinking Religious Rhetorics, Gendercide, and HB2 after Orlando (@theTable: Transcending Transphobia)

@ the Table, Archives, Politics, Social Justice

By Jacqueline M. Hidalgo. As a student and teacher of religion, I must wrestle with the way that religious discourses and practices have been deeply implicated in settler colonial violence and gendercide, undertaken in the name of “doing good,” of doing what is construed as divinely right and natural. In late eighteenth century colonial New […]

@ the Table, Archives, FSR, Politics, Social Justice

In the wake of the passing of HB2 (“Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act”) in North Carolina, the ongoing discussions regarding the rights, safety, and discrimination against trans*persons have come to the fore. Many have weighed in on the controversy including those who cite their religious beliefs as reasons to support the law or demand […]

Call for Courage in Contemporary U.S. Public Discourse

Current Events, Faith Practices, Pedagogy, Politics

By Rosemary Carbine. The Workgroup on Constructive Theology recently produced a video titled Fear Not!, which encourages Christians to respond in faith to the dangerous public discourse of the current U.S. political season, which has featured prominent public figures who endorse Islamophobia, racism, anti-immigration policies against refugees, and so forth on religious grounds. Inciting a […]

Sites of Racialization: Headscarves, Turbans, and “Brown Bodies” (@theTable: Intersecting Islamophobia)

@ the Table, Faith Practices, Interreligious Dialogue

By Kristin Garrity Şekerci. This blog is in response to Tanisha Ramachandran’s piece “Racializing Religion.” In her blog, Ramachandran argues the importance of understanding the intersection of race and religion, and how power and privilege reinforces the othering and subordination of Muslims and those perceived to be. Ramachandran cites the work of contemporary scholar Leerom […]

Genuine Community Does Not Mean Equal Community: Taking a Seat at the Interfaith Table (@theTable: Intersecting Islamophobia)

@ the Table, Interreligious Dialogue

By Jem Jebbia. I remember a concrete feeling of confusion and frustration one day in my Practice of Ministry course while studying in the University of Chicago’s Master of Divinity Program. Each week, our assignment was to reflect on a particular theological theme, like ethics, interfaith interactions, or this particular week’s theme, “calling.” I said […]
