FSR is Hiring/Consultant for Organizational Planning
Feminist Studies in Religion, Inc., (FSR) invites applications for a consultant to facilitate an organizational review and planning process that will further our efforts to develop a mission-focused, sustainable, and accessible nonprofit and member-led educational organization.
Responsibilities:
- Facilitate the Board of Director’s review of the organization, including the mission, structure, goals, and policies.
- Organize listening sessions with constituencies concerning the current and future organization of FSR, Inc., guided especially by our commitments to anti-racism and multicultural and multireligious feminist studies in religion
- Research existing models of academic and nonprofit membership or subscription organizations, especially regarding mission, governance, financial sustainability, and technological infrastructure
Deliverables: Working with the Board of Directors, this position will develop recommendations for the organization’s direction, with particular emphasis on building FSR as a membership-based organization or another model that will build our capacity to further our mission. At the end of the consultant phase, a report providing an organizational overview and recommendations for developing a member-based/communal model will be presented to the Board for review and approval.
Expected Skills and Qualifications:
- 2+ years experience working with nonprofit administration and/or member-based organizations such as academic/professional associations, including with board governance and strategic planning
- Appreciation for and commitment to values and contributions of diverse, intersectional, and multireligious global feminisms
- Experience in or familiarity with academic settings (research, teaching, or administration)
- An earned advanced degree in a relevant field such as religious studies; women’s and gender studies; or nonprofit management (minimum master’s degree, PhD preferred)
- Digital competence (especially Google suite and social media)
Details: the compensation is $12,000; expected timeline 4-6 months; work is remote except for attendance at AAR/SBL in Denver, November 21-24, 2026 (reimbursed)
Note: this is the first phase of the project. The person serving in this role may be considered for the implementation phase of the project if both parties agree. The organization has budgeted $18,000 for the second phase.
Feminist Studies in Religion is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization that fosters feminist studies in religion in all of its variety and diversity. Founded in 1983, we are the institutional home of Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, the first and longest runningpeer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to feminist studies in religion. Over the years, we have developed FSRBlog, FSRLab, and other public-facing and open access venues that foster communication and collaboration among academics, activists, artists, religious communities, and grassroots organizations working at the intersections of feminism and religion. FSR also organizes panels and pop-ups at the annual and virtual meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature and American Academy of Religion.
